Zunder has inaugurated the largest ultra-fast electric vehicle charging station on the A-66. Located at Hotel Romero in Mérida, this station offers 16 charging points with power outputs of up to 360 kW, making it the most significant on the A-66 Ruta de la Plata motorway. This new ultra-fast charging infrastructure, positioned at kilometre 630 of the Ruta de la Plata, provides additional services for users, including a restaurant, hotel, and rest areas.

As a leading operator of ultra-fast charging infrastructure for electric vehicles in Spain and Southern Europe, Zunder has unveiled its new charging station at Hotel Romero (Mérida). Positioned at kilometre 630 of the Ruta de la Plata motorway, this is the most powerful station in the region and one of the largest in all of Extremadura. The station features 16 ultra-fast charging points equipped with CCS connectors delivering up to 360 kW, enabling vehicles to recharge their batteries within just a few minutes. In addition, the chargers are compatible with all payment methods and include the Plug&Charge functionality, ensuring a seamless and automated charging experience for users.
Zunder Leading Ultra-Fast Electric Charging in Extremadura
Strategically located at Hotel Romero, alongside the Ruta de la Plata motorway, this station marks a milestone in promoting more efficient and sustainable mobility in Extremadura. The region holds tremendous potential for developing charging infrastructure and facilitating electric vehicle transit along the north-south axis of the Iberian Peninsula.
Zunder leads the way in Extremadura, deploying an extensive ultra-fast charging network on a key route within its growth and sustainability strategy. Currently, Zunder’s network in Extremadura includes:
- Monesterio: 12 CCS charging points with 360 kW
- Lobón: 4 CCS charging points with 100 kW
- Hotel Romero, Mérida: 16 CCS charging points with 360 kW
- Maltravieso: 2 CCS charging points with 100 kW and 2 CCS with 25 kW
- Almendralejo: 2 CCS charging points with 50 kW, 2 CHAdeMO with 50 kW, 1 Type 2 with 43 kW, and 2 Type 2 with 22 kW
This totals 43 charging points, of which nearly 80% are fast or ultra-fast.

According to Zunder’s latest data, at the end of 2023, there were 1,092 electric cars in Extremadura. Registrations of electric vehicles have seen a significant increase in 2024, with 280 electric cars registered, accounting for 3% of total car registrations in the region. Notably, the city of Mérida has recorded an increase in electric vehicle registrations so far this year, reflecting a positive trend towards the transition to electric mobility.
