This week, we had the opportunity to test Volkswagen’s new 100% electric van, the ID Buzz Cargo: Could this be the best electric van on the market? We were already familiar with the ID Buzz in its family version, which received great acclaim for its design. Now, the German brand introduces its cargo version, tailored for transportation needs.
The ID Buzz Cargo starts at €40,420 for the smaller battery version with 59kWh and 170hp, and from €47,405 for the larger battery version with 79kWh capacity and 286hp. There’s also a 79kWh battery version with all-wheel drive that delivers 340hp, starting at €50,180. In our case, we tested the version equipped with the larger 79kWh battery and rear-wheel drive. Based on our tests, this version achieves a range of approximately 350km in urban and suburban environments, and around 250km when driving at 120km/h on highways.
Charging Test at a Zunder Station
We had the chance to perform an ultra-fast charging test at one of our 400kW chargers, specifically at the Zunder Charging Station at Área Tudanca, in Aranda de Duero. We were pleasantly surprised by the impressive charging curve. The peak charging power we observed was just over 180kW. While this peak power drops off quickly, the overall charging curve remained solid. Notably, at 82% battery charge, the vehicle was still able to charge at nearly 90kW. Few electric vehicles manage to sustain that level of power at such a high state of charge.
This means the charging time for the 20% to 80% range with this ID Buzz is just under 30 minutes. Volkswagen has delivered an excellent option for those seeking a 100% electric last-mile delivery van.
