Chinese car manufacturers are introducing some truly exciting electric vehicle models to the European market, and BYD is one of these manufacturers. While the brand might be unfamiliar to many, it is, in fact, the world’s largest producer of electrified cars. With a comprehensive range of vehicles across various segments, BYD has made a strong entry into the Spanish market, delivering nearly 2,800 units so far this year.
A few months ago, the Chinese manufacturer introduced the BYD Seal, a fully electric saloon designed to compete directly with the Tesla Model 3. Undoubtedly, this car stands out as a revolutionary model in its segment, thanks to its excellent value for money. It is available in two versions: a rear-wheel drive (RWD) model with 204 hp and a certified range of 500 km WLTP, and an all-wheel drive (AWD) version offering a range of 450 km WLTP and 530 hp, capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds.
Excluding government incentives for electric vehicle purchases, the Seal range starts at €46,990 for the RWD version and €48,990 for the AWD version. Both models feature an 82.5 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) “blade” battery, which, according to the brand, is significantly safer, longer-lasting, and more efficient compared to traditional lithium-ion batteries found in competitors’ vehicles.
Our Review
After testing the BYD Seal and Seal U models, our first impression is that these cars offer excellent sound insulation, with minimal wind noise even at high speeds. The seats are exceptionally comfortable, and the interior materials are of very high quality, comparable to premium European manufacturers.
In terms of technology, the vehicles are equally impressive. For instance, the 15.6-inch central infotainment screen is rotatable, allowing for both vertical and horizontal orientations. On the safety front, the models are equipped with the latest driver assistance systems, including adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, and automatic emergency braking, among others.
An SUV Alternative
Alongside the Seal, BYD has introduced the BYD Seal U, an SUV version that shares the same high standards of quality, sound insulation, craftsmanship, technology, and safety as the Seal but offers the added advantage of a higher driving position. One improvement in the Seal U is a larger battery, but this results in slightly reduced certified range due to increased energy consumption. The Seal U starts at €42,290, excluding government incentives for electric vehicle purchases.
Charging Test at Zunder
To evaluate charging performance, we tested a Seal U at one of our 360 kW ultra-fast charging stations, based on the manufacturer’s claim that the vehicle supports a peak charging power of up to 150 kW. What were the results?
The first observation is that the Seal U’s charging curve is quite linear. We found that from 10% to 38%, the car maintained its maximum peak power of 150 kW. After 38%, the charging power dropped to 90 kW, and once the battery exceeded 80%, the charging power decreased further, dropping below 50 kW as the session concluded. Charging from 10% to 80% took approximately 35 minutes.
